Our favourite take away spots on Maggie

Our favourite take away spots on Maggie

Some of the best meals on Maggie don’t need a table booking. Grab something good, find a patch of grass or sand and make the most of being on an island. From breakfast by the beach to loaded burgers, and woodfired pizza at sunset, these are a few of our favourite takeaway options.

LAVA LAVA + PICNIC BAY

If you’ve got little ones in tow, Lava Lava makes an easy start to a morning in Picnic Bay. Tucked into Seasalt Arcade, you can grab coffee, breakfast, smoothies and something sweet before heading down towards the water.

One of our favourite little touches is their beach toy box, where the kids can borrow a bucket and spade to take down to the beach. There’s also a fenced playground along the Picnic Bay foreshore, so you can grab takeaway, find a shady spot and let the kids burn off some energy.

From there, wander out along the historic Picnic Bay Jetty, head onto the sand or settle in under the trees and make a morning of it.

Our pick: Breakfast and coffee from Lava Lava, beach toys for the kids and a morning by the water.

ISLAND BURGER + NELLY BAY

Island Burger is one of those spots where takeaway makes perfect sense because Nelly Bay Beach is directly in front of you. Grab your burgers head down to the sand, or wander along the Nelly Bay Esplanade and find your spot.

If you’ve got kids with you, there’s also a playground not far away along the Nelly Bay esplanade, making it an easy option for a relaxed family lunch or dinner without having to keep everyone sitting at a table.

Stay for a swim, walk the esplanade, let the kids tackle the islands biggest playground, or find a patch of grass overlooking the water. Sometimes burgers on the beach are all the dinner plans you need.

Our pick: Burgers down to the Nelly Bay Beach and nowhere else you need to be.

RIC’S PIZZA + A MAGGIE SUNSET

Ric’s Woodfire Pizza gives you a couple of good options depending on where you are on the island. You’ll find Ric at Jungle Club Magnetic Island in Nelly Bay Thursday to Monday from 5–8pm, serving woodfired pizzas to dine in under the palms or take away. Jungle Club Magnetic Island

On Sundays, Ric also fires up the oven at Bounce in Horseshoe Bay from 4–8pm. Grab a pizza and a table on the deck, or take a short stroll down to Horseshoe Bay and catch the sunset over the bay. It’s a pretty hard combination to beat: woodfired pizza and the islands easiest sunset.

Our pick: If it’s Sunday, grab Ric’s at Bounce and take it down to the beach for a Horseshoe Bay sunset. Otherwise, pick one up from Jungle Club and choose your own spot for dinner.

TAKE IT TO THE BEACH

That’s probably the theme here. There are plenty of great places to sit down and eat on Maggie, but sometimes the better table is a picnic rug, a park bench or a patch of sand. And if you feel like calling it a day, take it back to your accommodation, put on a movie, pull out the board games and settle in for a quiet island night. Takeaway on Maggie is less about eating on the run and more about slowing things down.
