Tucked into the hills above Picnic Bay and backing directly onto national park, Magnetic Island Country Club might have one of the more uniquely Maggie settings for a round of golf. Think huge granite boulders, hoop pines, resident curlews and the possibility of spotting a koala or even the occasional echidna while making your way around the course.

It’s a nine hole course configured to play as 18, with alternate tees on a number of holes changing things up on your second lap. Don’t let the relaxed island setting fool you either. Tight fairways, elevation changes, creeks, enormous boulders and strategically placed grass bunkers make this a surprisingly tricky little course.

Visitors are very welcome, whether you’re a regular golfer or haven’t picked up a club in years. Club hire, pull buggies and motorised carts are available, making it an easy activity to add to your island stay without travelling with your own gear. Social golf is available seven days a week, with regular competitions and more casual club events throughout the week.

The fully licensed clubhouse is there when the clubs are packed away, and larger groups can organise social golf days, team competitions and novelty events. Birthdays, reunions, bucks days, corporate groups and other celebrations can all be catered around a round of golf.

Best of all, it’s a member owned, not for profit club, with money from green fees, the bar and sponsors going back into maintaining the course and clubhouse. It’s relaxed, welcoming and refreshingly unpretentious, which feels pretty fitting for Maggie.

WHAT WE LOVE

Golf Among the Granite: Green fairways meet Maggie’s granite landscape, with huge boulders, gum trees, national park and local wildlife creating a golf course that could only really exist here.

Everyone’s Welcome: You don’t need to be a member or even a particularly serious golfer. Social players are welcome seven days a week, with clubs and buggies available to hire if you’ve arrived empty handed.

Nine Holes, Played as 18: Alternate tees change a number of holes on your second time around, while elevation, creeks, grass bunkers and some very strategically positioned Maggie boulders keep things interesting.

Weddings & Functions: With a peaceful Picnic Bay setting surrounded by national park, the Country Club is a beautiful spot for weddings, celebrations and private functions. The clubhouse and grounds can cater for everything from intimate gatherings to larger events, with plenty of that relaxed Maggie atmosphere.
