Nomads Magnetic Island
Perched right on the waterfront at the southern end of Nelly Bay, Nomads Magnetic Island is one of those places people book for a few nights and somehow end up staying much longer. Palm trees, ocean views, a pool overlooking the water and a lively social scene give it much more of a tropical island resort feel than your typical backpackers.
Accommodation ranges from budget friendly shared dorms to private rooms and those instantly recognisable A frame bungalows, dotted through the tropical grounds with the Coral Sea as their backdrop. Whether you’re travelling solo, with friends or looking for a private room without losing the social side of hostel life, there are plenty of options.
A big part of the Nomads experience happens around The Island Bar, with food, drinks, live music and regular events bringing everyone together. Spend the afternoon around the pool, grab something to eat, then settle in for sunset drinks as the light disappears across the water.
It’s also an easy base for exploring Maggie. The island bus stops right out front, Rocky Bay is nearby and the team can help organise tours and activities when you’re ready to venture further than the pool.
WHAT WE LOVE
Wake Up by the Water: The waterfront setting is the real standout, with palms, ocean views and those classic A frame bungalows giving the whole place a proper tropical island feel.
Island Burger: Burgers by the beach are pretty hard to argue with. Island Burger is right onsite serving up burgers, loaded fries and easy feeds, perfect for grabbing something between swims or settling in with dinner and a drink at The Island Bar.
Pool Days to Sunset Drinks: Spend the afternoon around the pool, grab a drink from The Island Bar and stick around as the sun goes down. With live music and regular events, there’s usually something happening without needing to leave the property.
