Magnetic Island Sea Kayaks
There’s something pretty special about exploring Maggie from the quiet of a kayak. Magnetic Island Sea Kayaks takes paddlers along the island’s coastline, combining secluded bays, granite headlands, marine life and plenty of local knowledge in small guided tours.
The Morning Tour heads out from Horseshoe Bay and along the island’s northern coastline, usually towards secluded Balding Bay or Radical Bay. Along the way, keep an eye out for sea turtles, dolphins, wading birds and birds of prey, with humpback whales another possibility during their annual migration. There’s also plenty to learn about the island’s history and ecology while seeing a side of the coastline you simply don’t get from the road.
Prefer golden hour? The Sunset Tour stays within the sheltered waters of Horseshoe Bay, paddling towards Horseshoe Bay Point before drifting back across seagrass beds and coral gardens. Turtles regularly surface nearby, and towards the end of the tour you can settle back with a drink and watch the sun disappear behind the sailboats anchored in the bay.
Both experiences are two hours and suitable for beginner to intermediate paddlers, with full instruction and a safety briefing before you launch. Double sea kayaks, paddles and safety equipment are supplied, and your guide takes photos along the way so you can concentrate on the experience.
WHAT WE LOVE
A Different View of Maggie: Quietly paddling beneath the island’s huge granite headlands gives you a completely different perspective, with secluded bays, wildlife and stretches of coastline you’ll never see from the road.
Morning Wildlife Adventures: Paddle towards Balding or Radical Bay while keeping watch for turtles, dolphins and birdlife. Visit during whale season and you might even spot a humpback passing the island.
Sunset from the Water: Horseshoe Bay already puts on a pretty good sunset. Watching it from a kayak with a drink in hand, anchored yachts in the distance and turtles surfacing nearby makes it even better.
Beginner Friendly: You don’t need to arrive knowing how to sea kayak. Full instruction and a safety briefing are provided, with tours suitable for beginner to intermediate paddlers.
